Each year the World Health Organization (WHO) holds a World Health Day and picks an important theme to highlight. On April 7th, their theme was diabetes and diabetes awareness. (Source: who.int)
Did you know that, according to the International Diabetes Federation, more than 640 million people will be living with diabetes by the year 2040? That’s a rise of more than 225 million from the 415 million who have diabetes today.
It’s no wonder the WHO picked diabetes. The growing prevalence is becoming epidemic. We now have 1 in 8 people in North America who have diabetes. (Source: idf.org)
What can be done?
The American Medical Group Association (AMGA)–an organization founded on the idea of helping physicians practicing in groups to share best practices, experiences, and strategies to improve the quality of patient care–recently announced it’s next national campaign, titled Diabetes: Together 2 Goal. The purpose of the campaign is to “improve the lives of 1 million people with Type 2 diabetes.” (Source: amga.org) This Together 2 Goal campaign is build on 11 “campaign planks” included below:
