October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a global campaign to promote awareness, encourage early detection, and support those affected by breast cancer. It’s a reminder for women (and men!) to stay proactive about their health; early detection significantly increases the chances of successful treatment.

Why Routine Check-ups Matter

Routine check-ups, including mammograms, are critical in identifying breast cancer early—even before symptoms appear. The American Cancer Society recommends women aged 40 and above to start getting annual or biannual mammograms, depending on their individual risk factors. For younger women with a family history of breast cancer, consulting with a healthcare provider about starting screenings earlier may be wise.

These appointments aren’t just about mammograms. They provide an opportunity for doctors to perform clinical breast exams, discuss any noticeable changes, and assess your overall risk. Regular visits ensure you stay informed and on top of your health.

The Power of Self-Exams

While routine screenings are essential, self-exams are also a powerful tool you can use at home. Familiarizing yourself with the normal look and feel of your breasts helps you recognize early warning signs, such as lumps, swelling, dimpling, or changes in nipple appearance.

Conduct a self-exam once a month, ideally a few days after your menstrual cycle ends. Stand in front of a mirror, use your fingers to gently feel around your breast tissue, and note any irregularities. If you discover any unusual changes, schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider at Horizon Family Medical Group straight away.

Awareness Saves Lives

Breast cancer can affect anyone, and spreading awareness encourages people to make their health a priority. Throughout October, organizations and communities host events, fundraisers, and educational campaigns to spread the message of early detection.

We strongly encourage you and your loved ones to encourage one another to get screened.

Taking control of your health through routine check-ups and self-exams is one of the most effective ways to catch breast cancer early.
