Each year, on the third Thursday of November, people across the country participate in the Great American Smokeout (GASO), a movement dedicated to helping individuals quit smoking. This year’s event on November 21st is an invitation for smokers to take a bold step toward a healthier, smoke-free life. While quitting smoking is a challenging journey, it’s one that can be life-changing, and GASO is here to provide support along the way.

Smoking is a significant health risk, linked to heart disease, lung cancer, stroke, and various respiratory illnesses. With more than 16 million Americans currently living with a disease caused by smoking, the need to quit has never been more urgent. However, quitting smoking is not a simple process, and for many, it’s a path filled with obstacles. Thankfully, those who seek the guidance of a doctor or healthcare professional are two to three times more likely to successfully quit than those who attempt to quit on their own.

Horizon Family Medical Group, in collaboration with the American Lung Association (lung.org), advocates for resources and support to make quitting more attainable. Together, we provide smokers with valuable information on cessation programs, counseling, and medical options to make the quitting process more manageable. The American Lung Association’s comprehensive guides, support networks, and free resources offer a lifeline for those looking to leave cigarettes behind.

GASO serves as an annual reminder that with the right support and resources, quitting smoking is possible.

If you’re ready to take on the challenge, GASO is an ideal day to start. Reach out to your doctor, explore resources at lung.org, and take advantage of the numerous programs available. Surround yourself with a support system, set goals, and remember that every day smoke-free is a day closer to a healthier future.

Join us in making this year’s Great American Smokeout the first day of a smoke-free life, and inspire others to take their own journey toward quitting. Let’s breathe easier and live healthier—together.
